August: A Month of Fun and Wacky Holidays

As summer blazes on, we've got a lineup of holidays that are sure to keep you entertained and smiling all month long. Here’s what’s in store for August:

August 3 - National Watermelon Day

Time to get your watermelon on! Whether you like it sliced, diced, or blended into a smoothie, this day is all about enjoying this juicy summer favorite. We hear there’s nothing like a watermelon seed-spitting contest to bring the community together – just be sure to aim away from your friends!

August 4 - International Beer Day

Cheers to International Beer Day! Check out some of our area breweries that will be ready to serve you the best hops around. Grab a pint, relax, and toast to good times.

August 4 - National Friendship Day

What’s better than a day dedicated to celebrating friends? Call up your besties, have a laugh, and maybe reminisce about those questionable fashion choices from the '90s. (Did someone say neon windbreakers?)

August 10 - National S'mores Day

Indulge in a sweet campfire classic! Gather around the fire to toast marshmallows, melt chocolate, and create the ultimate treat!

August 15 - National Relaxation Day

Take a deep breath, Troy. It’s National Relaxation Day, a perfect excuse to do absolutely nothing. Whether you’re lounging in a hammock, taking a walk, or enjoying a quiet moment with a good book, today is all about you.

CITY NEWS: Troy has been awarded several grants this year to improve pedestrian safety, recreational facilities, and youth programs. The Local Highway Technical Assistance Council (LHTAC) awarded Troy a $250,000 Child Pedestrian Safety Grant. This, combined with a similar grant from 2022, brings the total to $500,000 for constructing a safe route along Big Meadow Road.

These improvements aim to make the route safer for children walking to school and the city park. Additionally, the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation granted Troy over $212,000 to enhance its RV park. Planned upgrades include public restrooms, gazebos at each RV space, and a children's play structure. Troy also received $20,000 from the Idaho Out of School Network and $7,500 from the Lewis-Clark Valley Healthcare Foundation to support the Troy Summer Youth Program.

Weed Control and Fire Safety

This summer has been exceptionally dry, with numerous fires occurring in our region. To mitigate fire hazards, it is crucial that residents maintain their properties by controlling weed growth and keeping their yards mowed. Not only can overgrown weeds pose a significant fire risk, but they can also be a nuisance for neighbors

and other residents.

Noxious weeds are a particular concern in our area, with common species like Canada thistle and Morning Glory often mistaken for flowers. However, these plants are classified as harmful under Idaho law, which lists 67 species of noxious weeds. They can spread quickly and become difficult to eradicate, making it essential to prevent them from taking root and hopping to other yards.

As per Troy Code 7-4-2, residents are required to destroy noxious weeds on their premises, extending to the center of the street or alley. The term "weeds" includes any troublesome, useless, or noxious vegetable growth. If weed growth is not addressed, the municipality has the authority to remove the weeds, with the costs becoming a lien on the property.

The city urges all residents to adhere to these guidelines to protect our community from fire hazards and maintain a pleasant environment for everyone. Let's work together to keep Troy safe and beautiful!
